A gallery of more than 3000 followed the play, and were delighted by Sarazen's brilliant display on the Metropolitan links. Sarazen was out in 34 and home in 35. He would have done better going out, but he missed two putts. Kirkwood played steadily, out in 37 and home in a brilliant 34. On the outward half he was bunkered four times.
Shelley, the only New Zealand amateur, failed lamentably with 93. '., Shaw, playing steadily, came home well in 35. The other New Zealanders were J. Watt 78, E. S. Douglas 83, and Lambie 82. ! One of the surprises of the tournament was the performance of Joe Ezer, an independent American professional, who came home in 34 and tied for second place with a fine 70.
