"NELL GWYN"

NOTABLE ENGLISH FILMS Three outstanding pictures produced by British Dominions Films, "Nell Gwyn," "Girls, Please," and "Lilies of the Field," will shortly be released in New Zealand. The first is an ambitious production providing a lavish spectacle of Restoration times, with a story written round Charles 11. and Nell Gwyn. The leading parts are played by Cedric Hardwicke and Anna Neagle. "Girls, Please," the last comedy that Sydney Howard made before leaving for Hollywood, is in striking contrast. It is a jovial Howard mixU P of a schoolmaster in charge of a Sirls' school. Jane Baxter, a newcomer to the screen, applies the romantic interest.

, 4 Different again, but distinctive in 'is own way, is "Lilies of the Field," wuch was earlier known as "Betty to Mayfair," and is a romantic comedy starring Winifred Shotter, supported by Anthony Bushell, Ellis Jeffreys, and Claude Hulbert. Directed by Gorman Walker, who made some of S2® earliest talkie successes, including the Middle Watch," it offers the widest scope Winifred Shotter has yet " a d in films for her individual charm. £« role is that of an ultra-modern 6in who masquerades as a demure *!" or »a miss, and startles Mayfair with, her crinolines.

"LITTLE FRIEND'* In the Gaumont-British picture "Little Friend," soon to be released in New Zealand, the interpretation of the difficult character of the child is done by Nova Pilbeam, a 14-year-old artist. She exhibits something little short of genius in the manner in which her acting responds to the delicate graduations of the author in tracing the awakenings of the child to the growing tension of her home. The cast of "Little Friend" includes Matheson Lang, Lydia Sherwood, Arthur Margetson, Allan Jean Cadell, Jimmy Hanley, Clare Greet, Lewis Casson, Gibb McLaughlin, Dina Cotton and Jack Raine. First National is planning to team Leslie Howard and Jean Muir in a new picture tentatively called "Glorious." The story is by Rida Johnson Young, and Frank Borzagc, who recently completed "Flirtation Walk," is listed for the post of director. -Mr Howard's appearance is not certain; it depends upon the date of his return from England. * * • Joel McCrea will be Marlene Dietrich's leading man in "Caprice Espagnole," which will be under the direction of Josef von Sternberg. Mr McCrea was selected after a month of looking about, making tests, and going through the files. The picture is scheduled to begin in a few weeks. Rose Franken, author of "Another Language," has been hired by Fox to write a screen play for a new Shirley Temple picture.
