WHALE KILLED BY LINER
(i'BiESa ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, November 12. A whale, c:'. : -ated to be between 40 and 50 feet long, was killed on the night of November 4 about 300 miles off Sydney Heads, when the liner Mariposa struck it, while oa her voyage from Auckland to Sydney. The whale was seen about two feet'under the surface of the water, lying across the course »f tlw steamer and only a few feet from the bow. It. modv: no attempt 1o move, and was .struck heavily. Captain Meyer stated that the liner was travelling about •20 ' knots. A seaman on duty on the forecastle head reported that the whale was struck in the middle and bled profusely from the mouth immediately alter it. v. as hi!. 1 ! w.v.-; cut abotr. and become fast the bows, and the vessel had to go astern about two lengths to release it.
