Uoidstone, T. D. Lennie, C. W. Moore, W. W. Scarff, T. A. Johnson, and L. N. Hitchens (honorary secretary;. A return submitted to the meeting stated that the total number of applications received for seeds from August 9 to November 10 was 2192. The return also gave the following details:—

Threepenny packets of seed sold at Id, 8290; 6d packets sold at 2d, 2079; (manure, 506 141b bags; lime, 46icwt. Plants—Cabbage, 2350; cauliflower, 300; broccoli, 100; lettuce, 100; tomato, 1284; seed potatoes, 16921b; total takings, £B3 3s sd. Replying to questions, the chairman said that last year the total number of men supplied was 1163. The takings this year were ahead of last year. The men were satisfied with the quantity and quality of the seeds. This Year's Competitions The chairman said that" the chief businesss was to decide whether it was advisable to run competitions on lines similar to those run last year. For the competition the metropolitan area had been divided into six dis-

tricts, so that those in districts where the land was not as good as in other districts would not be handicapped. Mr Hitchens said that the committee had a balance to credit of £29 lis sd.

Mr Lennie suggested that third prizes should be provided. In some instances, in the past, half a dozen gardens were worthy of prizes, and if the committee could spare the money for extra prizes he was satisfied that they would be justified in doing so. It was agreed to hold competitions on the lines of last year's competitions.

On the motion of Mr Lennie, seconded by Mr Scarfl, it was decided to offer three prizes in each district, first 255, second 15s, and third 10s. It was decided, also, that if in the final judging the gardens in any district were not found up to standard, no prizes would be awarded. The supervisors in each district were appointed to make the preliminary judging, and the following were appointed to do the final judging: Messrs M. J. Barnett, E. Taylor, and T. V. Grimley. Entries are to close on Saturday, December 1.

Farmers in South Canterbury report that straying dogs are more of a nuisance this year than for some, time. In some cases as many as four dogs have been observed wandering over properties, and while they have not actually worried sheep, flocks have been disturbed. "But it is only another step from that to worrying sheep," one farmer remarked. In the Claremont district recently one man lost'five sheep through worrying, and it is stated that there are worriers in that locality. In an endeavour to alleviate the nuisance, the South Canterbury executive of the Farmers' Union has forwarded to the Dominion executive a remit asking for the amendment of the Dog Registration Act or Police Offences Act, to make the tying up of dogs at night compulsory.
