CROWDED DAY IN MELBOURNE

MANY CENTENARY EVENTS BIG AIR PAGEANT (Received November 11, 9.20 p.m.) MELBOURNE, November 11. Saturday was the biggest day in the Centenary programme so far. Many important evenvs were held simultaneously. The air pageant at Laverton attracted 100,000 people, who saw a thrilling display of aircraft and their uses in peace and war. They included the bombing of a model ship erected on the aerodrome. The air race winners attended and were presented with their prizes, cheques, and trophies, by the Duke of Gloucester. In conjunction with the pageant a giant barbecue was held. Twenty-seven bullocks were roasted on open fires and distributed among the visitors. At the showgrounds the naval, military, and air forces gave a gymkhana, in which there were spectacular displays by cavalry, infantry, artillery, armoured cars, and naval gunners.

The Duke had a busy day attending the pageant, the Flemington races, and a dinner at the Town Hall given by the Soldiers' League, at which more than 600 soldiers attended.

The Orion will be the first ship of the British mercantile marine to be launched by wireless telephone. The new liner will be 1 of approximately 24,000 tons gross.
