CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION EIGHTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT The annual report of • the Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association, to be presented to the eighteenth annual meeting on Thursday, November 22, records a successful year. Patrolmen had been employed on the North Beach, Sumner, and New Brighton beaches, and no fatalities had occurred during the patrol hours. The gear of the clubs was in excellent order. Three carnival days had been held, one at South Brighton, one at Taylor's Mistake, and one at New Brighton. It was pleasing to note that the standard of efficiency seemed to be improving every year. More teams had been seen in action last season than before, and their work showed signs of conscientious training. There had been a distinct improvement in the junior and Intermediate sections. The pennant for the champion surf club of Canterbury had been won by New Brighton. A Strenuous Season The clubs had had a strenuous season and a large number of rescues had been made. A particularly fine rescue had been made by the members of the North Beach Club. It could not be too strongly emphasised that the public should bathe between the safety The association had met Mr R. A. Ingram, of the New Zealand Surf Association, and a much closer co-opera-tion had been. established with the parent body. The standard of lifesaving in the Dominion was becoming high, and the sport was one that was worthy of international recognition. In an attempt to advance the interests of life-saving in other centres, a North Beach team had given exhibitions in Timaru.
