METROPOLITAN DAY

Weal summer conditions prevailed for the concluding day's programme of the Canterbury Jockey Club's metropolitan meeting at Riccarton on Saturday. In contrast to the weather on the three previous days of the gathering, a warm sun made Us presence felt, in some places with uncomfortable strength, and the outing was voted easily the most enjoyable of the week's festivities. The attendance was again large, but not quite up to the numbers on New Zealand Cup Day, and patrons were treated to some excellent racing with several exciting finishes. The track had been liberally watered overnight, but the surface hardened up again under the influence of sun and breeze, and the going was very firm and conducive to fast times.

The principal event, the Metropolitan Handicap, attracted a strong field, 'end there was a close dispute for the ' honour of favouritism. The investments on the race totalled £6450, of ; which £3994 was on the place machine. Sweet Agnes was a much better favjourite than Vintage, but disappointed I her large army of supporters. The ■ event was an easy proposition for Vintjage, who outclassed the opposition over i the last furlong. He is now right back : to the form which enabled him to | win the Dunedin Cup in February last, and provided he keeps in his present Bound condition, he will have to be seriously considered for the. Auckland '■ Cup. The time for the laie, 2min 30 1 2-ssec, was only a fifth of a second ', outside the course record for a mile [and a half, and no doubt if there I had been an opponent to extend him f more over the final stages, he would have established fresh figures. Vint- '■ age was bred by his owner, Mr D. W. ; Westenra, and was not raced until he f- was a four-year-old, last season, when l he won six races and was second twice r and third once, in nine starts. He ran • twice at the Wellington meeting last month for one third placing, so that his record to date is made up of eight wins, two seconds, and two third placings in 13 starts. Vintage was ridden a well-judged race by L. G. Morris, who rode Concentrate to victory in the race two years ago. Southdown executed one of his best races for some time in ; following Vintage home, while the i Hawke's Bay rnare. Gold Trail, ran up to her recent consistent form by being a close third. Speculation was again brisk, but the day's total failed to reach the high ; figures recorded on the corresponding ' day last year. There was, however, a ; substantial increase over the meeting, - which should show a good profit. The : sum of £35,774 (win £14,374 10s, place £21,399 10s) was handled as against £38,325 (win £16,328, place £21,997) 12 months ago. The total for the four days' racing was £115,311 10s, as compared with £110,164 10s at last year's gathering, an increase of £5147. The meeting was well organised throughout, and the chairman, Mr A. ; S. Elworthy and his enthusiastic band of helpers, must have felt gratified at ■ the remarkably successful week's rac- • ing, which was undoubtedly the most enjoyable seen at Riccarton in recent years. The secretary, Mr F. T. H. Bell, and his staff, are to be congratulated on their excellent work, and the handicapping efforts of Mr J. E.

Henrys, and the starting of Mr P. D. Mac Nab materially assisted towards the satisfactory results recorded. Details of the racing are as follows:

NOTES ON THE RACING His First Win Heather Glow was again in keen demand for the Suburban Handicap, but as on the second day he encountered some trouble rounding the far turn, and lost any chance he possessed. Wino quickly assumed charge from the start, the slowest away being Cottingham, Palatinate, and Honest Maid. Semper Paratus was in second place to Wino at the end of two furlongs, but then drifted and Wino was followed round the home turn by Vitaphone, Cottingham, Sky Rover, Semper Paratus, Honest Maid, and Chaste. Wino still had charge entering the straight from Vitaphone, Palatinate, Cottingham, Sky Rover, Semper Paratus, and Heather Glow, but tired passing the distance, and Sky Rover forged his way through on the rails, while Palatinate, Hostile, and Semper Paratus became prominent. Semper Paratus finished very fast, and failed to get up to Sky Rover by only a narrow margin, and had him beaten in another stride. Hostile also put in some good work to get third money from Palatinate. Vitaphone, Wino, Cottingham, Revision. Heather Glow, and Honest Maid finished in that order.

Sky Rover had a much better run than on Monday, when he met with interference during th<i middle stages. He had a close call in this event, for Semper Paratus, but for a delayed finishing effort, would have beaten him. As it was. he headed him a stride after passing the post. This was Sky Rover's first win. Semper Paratus was responsible for a creditable race under his big weight in a fast-run mile, as he had a good deal of leeway to make up from the home turn. Hostile showed his first glimpse of form, while Palatinate improved considerably on his previous race at the meeting. Cottingham bolted a mile before the start, and careered into the scraping shed enclosure, fortunately without any serious consequences. He was prominent at the straight entrance, but no doubt his self-imposed task settled his prospects. Quite Soon Wins

Colossian headed the list of investments in the Seymour Handicap and when he had charge a few strides off the post, his supporters had reason to be pleased with their judgment. At this stage Quite Soon and Maroha emerged from the ruck, and both wore down Colossian, Quite Soon gaining a neck verdict from Maroha, who beat Colossian by a similar margin. Tunneller was half a length back, in front of Bella Rosa, Silver Step, Elbanor, and Golden Dart.

Quite Soon, a daughter of Dame Straitlace, has made marked improvement this season, and has shown more stamina than previously. Maroha has been gradually coming on, and a win for him is not far distant. Colossian seemed to be winning easily towards the line, but his rider was unable to get any more out of him. Tunneller was always in the picture, a pleasing change from his recent s'howings. Elbanor turned on his usual burst of speed, and lasted longer than in former attempts over this distance. Not Troubled

Mobile had a decisive victory in the Members' Handicap, and if it had been necessary to ride him right out, he would have threatened the record time for seven furlongs. Cranford rushed to the front after a furlong had been covered, and at the half mile was four lengths in front of Mobile, with a similar margin to Cricket Bat. Mobile gradually reduced the gap rounding the turn into the straight, and shortly after entering the run home he drew, up to Cranford and had him beaten at the distance, going on to win easing up. Cricket Bat had a good deal of ground to make up entering the straight, but settled down to a solid finishing run, and comfortably beat Cranford. Silver Streak was a poor +!:'rd,-and Red Boa, who could not raise a, gallop on the hard going, was tailed off. The first three furlongs took 36 2-Sscc and the last half mile 48sec.

v A Smart Juvenile ■ Silver Coat was sent out a staunch favourite for the Pioneer Handicap, but after reaching the course proper, close in behind the leaders, he attempted a run between Hororata and Honour's Lad, and could not get through, being wedged in for the greater part of the run home. In the meantime, Round Up drew to the front from the three mentioned, and went on to record an easy win from Hororata, who held off Silver Coat. Honour's Lad was a length away next, and then came Penelope, Bun Fight, and Kinnoull.

Round Up recorded a popular win for his Hawke's Bay owner, who also races the youngster's brother Bodyline. Hororata ran up to her Trentham form, and stayed on well. Silver Coat was undoubtedly very unfortunate in the position ho ran into just before reaching the distance. His rider used every endeavour fo push his mount through, but the gap was not big enough, and he was literally carried by Hororata and Honour's Lad over the last furlong. Honour's Lad gave a very encouraging display. He is an upstanding coif and one likely to develop into good class later. Penelope showed the effects of her hard week's racing, While Kinnoull disappointed after his easy won on the third day. Bun Fight

weight too much, which he was asked to carry from the outset. Earthquake endeavoured to clear out from the field and hung on surprisingly well just to be beaten out of the money. Heather Glow showed better form under the lighter scale, but nevertheless gave evidence that he was feeling the effects of some recent hard racing.

High-class Colt Synagogue was backed down to a short price in the Stonyhurst Handicap, and his win was the easiest of the day. He was the first to show out, but at the end of a furlong Hostis had taken charge from him, Knock Out, Gas Mask, Wonderful, and Tauramai. Hostis, Synagogue, and Knock Out were bunched rounding the home turn and entering the straight, but the run home had not been long in progress before Synagogue commenced to draw away, and he went on to win easing up from Tauramai, who was all out to head off Hostis. Knock Out was two lengths back, in front of Trumpet Blast, who was in last place at the three furlong post. Wonderful, Master Reynard, and Gas Mask. Synagogue won with a good deal in baud, in fact he was not asked to do

anything like his best over the last furlong. Tauramai ran another sound race, but is far from the class represented by Sporting Blood and Synagogue. Hostis created a good impression by his bold showing in the face of his short experience. Knock Out looked a likely place-getter until the last furlong was tackled, and will do well later in the season. Trumpet Blast attracted attention by finishing with a burst of speed after tailing the field for most of the journey. Wonderful did not last past the distance, and Master Reynard made a poor showing.

Concluding Event Sam Smith recorded a decisive victory in the concluding event, the Cressy Handicap. He was always close up to the leaders, and followed Grecian Prince and Fair Weather into the straight. He had the leaders beaten passing the distance, and went on to win without any trouble by two lengths from Fair Weather, who beat Gaysome by a similar margin. Kemal Pasha was next in front of Rocket and Sea Fox. Sam Smith's task was not a difficult one, as he won with something in hand. There is no doubt about his ability, and it is to be hoped that the lameness which has formerly troubled him has been definitely overcome, as he is up to the best class. Fair Weather hung on well, and may yet win a middle distance event. Gaysome again showed improvement, and should soon return to the winning list. Kemal Pasha did not show much of his attractive work in Wednesday's race. Sea Fox drew No. 1 at the barrier, and was one of the first to show out, but he gradually lost his position, and was sent back to a rear berth during the middle part of the race, his chance then being hopeless. Grecian Prince showed more of his customary speed, but as usual could not carry on.

was one of the leaders to the false rail, but faded out over the business stages. Never in Doubt The Metropolitan Handicap provided an interesting contest throughout. After some trouble at the barrier, the field was dispatched to a good line, and going out of the straight Rebel Star took up the role of pacemaker, and at the mile post, reached in 50 3-5 sec, he led with a clear advantage from Great Star and Red Manfred, together with Davolo and Vintage in close attendance, the last at this stage being Nightform, Silver Sight, and Signaller. There was not much Tiaterial change rounding the top anc home turns, and Rebel Star still had charge entering the straight from Great Star, Davolo, Vintage, Gold Trail, Southdown, Sweet Agnes, and Polydora, all running in fairly close order. A quick change, however,*took place as soon as the run home was commenced, as Vintage soon drew to the front, and was followed by Gold Trail and Polydora on the outside and Southdown, Red Manfred and Silver Sight on the inner. None of these had •my chance with Vintage, who wor as easily as he did on Wednesday, but they provided a good tussle for second honours, Southdown finishing very solidly to beat Gold Trail by a neck, with Polydora a length away. Silver Sight, who put. in a remarkably good run from the top of the straight, was close up next in front of Red Manfred. Signaller, Walton Park, Cough, Might, Some Shamble, Sweet Agnes, Davolo, and Great Star with Rebel Star in last place.

Vintage had the race won three furlongs from home. The event was run at a sound pace, the last halfmile taking 49 3-ssec, with the winner not ridden out. His form at the meeting would make it appear as if he would have been very troublesome in the New Zealand Cup. Southdown ran an excellent race, his finish being especially impressive. Gold Trail made another solid attempt, while Polydora if anything made further improvement, and seemed to be coming on as the meeting progressed. Silver Sight travelled faster than anything over the last furlong, but again left his run too late.

A Washdyke Winner

The Otaio Plate resulted in a trying struggle between Hunting Go and Tout le Monde, with the Ellis brothers in opposition. After Scratchmere Scar and Heather Glow had shown out for the first furlong. Earthquake took charge and led round the top and home turns from Pink Lapel, Scratchmere Scar, Heather Glow, Sungem, and Hunting Go, with Importance and Tout le Monde in the rear. Earthquake was still in charge at the straight entrance from Heather Glow, Scratchmere Scar, Sungem, and Hunting Go.
