FOOD SHORTAGE IN GERMANY

CONTROLLER APPOINTED HARVESTS COMMANDEERED (Received November 6, 7.10 p.m.) BERLIN, November 5. Alarmed at the popular discontent due to rising food prices, the Government is seeking to centralise and control markets. It has appointed Dr. Goerdeler, former Mayor of Leipzig, national commissioner for the supervision of food prices, with practically dictatorial powers. He is responsible directly to Hen* Hitler. President Hindenburg appointed Dr. Goerdeler to a similar position in 1931, and he then reduced prices 10 per cent, within four months. The Government has taken control of the whole rye and wheat harvest. Cattle breeders are complaining of the serious shortage of fodder. They are forbidden to use wheat or rye to feed cattle. General Goering, in a decree against profiteering, states that punishment cannot be too great for those seeking to profit at the expense of the welfare of the people. In Brcslau the chief of police closed 24 butchers' shops because their prices were too high. Plumbers and builders are not allowed to use brass or copper.

CONFERENCE OF BISHOPS REBELS REFUSE TO COMI'ROMISE (Received November 7, 12.50 a.m.) BERLIN, November 6. Reichsbishop Mueller has summoned a Bishop's conference for today, but it is stated that Bishops Marahren.s, Meiser and Wurm are net attending as they refuse to compromise with Dr. Mueller.
