RECORD ENTRIES

REFLECTION OF A GOOD SEASON • . e ANALYSIS OF SECTIONS Entries for the show this year constitute a record for any metropolitan show conducted by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The figures generally reflect the excellent season which has been experienced for stock, and the animals are expected to come forward in the pink of condition. One of the most striking increases is found in the horse section. Here the figures easily constitute a record for the ground and show an increase of nearly 100 on the figures for last year, which were themselves a record. The entries for 1934 have reached a total of 3260, compared with 3049 in 1933 and 3082 in 1932. The following tables give an interesting analysis:—

Toward the close of the nineteenth century the number of sheep in Argentina was some 74,000,000 head, but this total declined to 67,000,000 in 1908, and to 43,000,000 in 1914. The most recent census figure relates to the year 1930, and is 44,400,000. The decrease in the number of sheep has resulted in a proportionate falling of! in the production of wool. The total production in 1895 was 208,000 tons; in 1906, 161,000 tons; in 1918, 132,500 tons; and in 1932, 135,000 tons. Nevertheless, Argentina is now second only to Australia among the wool exporting countries of the world, producing something like 10 per cent, of the world supply.
