TRANSPORT CO-ORDINATION BOARD

RESERVED DECISION ON QUEENSTOWN SERVICE

(SI'BCIAL TO til TIMARU, November 6. The Transport Co-ordination Board, consisting of Sir Stephen Allen (chairman), Messrs H. B. S. Johnstone, and L. Alderton, gave its reserved decision to-day in respect of the appeal by the Mount Cook Tourist Company, Ltd., against the decision of No. 9 Transport Authority, in refusing to grant the company a license to conduct a passenger service between Studholme Junction and Quccnstown, via Lindis Pass. The service would provide for the up journeys to be made on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and the down journeys on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, connecting with the first express from the north on the trip to Queenstown and with the express north on the trip from- Queenstown.

Mr W. J. Sim appeared for the appellant, and Mr E. P. Ward for Wanaka Motors, Ltd., who opposed the application, which was also opposed by Hunter's D.O.T. Motors, Ltd., Kurow Motors, Ltd., and Herron's Motors.

The board allowed the appeal and in its decision provided for a seasonal license to operate from October 1 to May 31, the service to commence on a date to be notified to the board by the company. The through fare from Studholme to Cromwell was fixed at 35s and the fare charges between Studholme and Omarama and intermediate sections at least 25 per cent, higher than the fares charged by the present operators, the Kurow Motor Company and Herron's Motors.

The effect of the license will be that Queenstown will now have a direct service with the north train, whereby it will be possible to reach Christchurch and the steamer express in one day, or vice versa.
