STEAMER HELD UP
♦ ——- DISPUTE REGARDING CARGO WORK The steamer Tees, which was to have sailed from Lyttelton at 1 p.m. yesterday for the Chatham Islands, has been held up because of a dispute between the crew and the owner, about the rate of payment for working cargo at the islands. The men at present receive 2s an hour more than their pay as seamen for working cargo.
It is stated that the crew refused to sail unless an undertaking was given that they would be paid New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union rates for cargo work. The master, Captain A. Anderson, who represented the owners, was unable to agree to this demand, and the departure of the ship was postponed. Later, the crew were given 24 hours' notice, which will expire to-day; but it is hoped that an early settlement will be reached.
Eleven passengers were aboard the vessel in readiness for sailing, and they had to return ashore.
