PETROL TAX REBATES

CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD ALLEGED (mass ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.I AUCKLAND, October 29. A series of charges against four men, of conspiracy to defraud the Government by obtaining rebates to which it was alleged they were not entitled on petrol used on fishing launches, was investigated before Mr Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court. The men were Charles Joseph de Luca, aged 37, a grocer, Raymond Brunton, aged 27, a fisherman, John Buchan, aged 51, a labourer, and Leslie Collier Buchan, aged 22, a storeman. Against de Luca there were two charges of false pretences and five of conspiring to obtain money by deceit; against Brunton one of conspiring; and against each of the Buchans two of conspiring. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr V. R. Meredith) said when the petrol tax was imposed provision was made for a refund to users of petrol for motor f'shing boats. The allegation was that fraud had been going on, with de Luca as the principal, to obtain excessive refunds for these fishermen. The case was adjourned.
