EDUCATION IN NEW ZEALAND
* DISTRICT STANDING COMMITTEE MEETS A general meeting of the Canterbury District Standing Committee on Education was held at the offices of the Canterbury Education Board recently, Dr. J. Hight, rector for Canterbury College, presiding over a large attendance of representatives of the Canterbury University College Council and the Professorial Board, the Canterbury Education Board, the . Christchurch and Tixnaru Technical College Boards, the New Zealand Educational Institute, Canterbury secondary and technical schools' staffs, and the Canterbury School Committees' Association. With a view to taking advantage of the offer of the Minister for Education (the Hon. R. Masters) to receive suggestions for the teaching of geography in the schools, it was decided to set up a committee representative of primary and secondary schools to report on the equipment that is available in the schools for the teaching of the subject. A report was received from a subcommittee appointed to summarise the standing committee's views on the school leaving certificate. It was resolved to circulate the report preparatory to discussing it at the next meeting. Mr G. Jobberns introduced a discussion on the use of the cinema in the schools, with special reference to geography. This was followed by ■an address by Professor J. Shelley on the use of the radio in education. Professor Shelley drew attention to the great development of educational broadcasting in America and England. In the latter the broadcasting authorities were associated with the board of education in providing a definite part of the daily curriculum.
