THE NANGA PARBAT TRAGEDY

GERMAN CLIMBERS TO TRY AGAIN SUCCESS ALMOST ACHIEVED (Received August 31, 11.15 p.m.) CALCUTTA, August 30. Six members of the German Nanga Parbat expedition are in Calcutta on their way home.

They say they intend to return for another attempt at the mountain. Herr Bechtold, who became leader in the place of Dr. Merkl after he was killed, said the expedition reached 26,000 feet, but was prevented from reaching the summit, GOO feet away, by terrible blizzards which caused the deaths of the three Germans and six porters. For a week the others tried to rescue the missing men, but were defeated by continuous blizzards and intense cold. Herr Bechtold praised the courage, endurance, and devotion ot the porters, who declared that whatever the danger they would gladly accompany the Germans m another attempt.
