GOVERNMENT SECURITIES (LKITED I'UKSS ASSOCIATION —l;y ELECTIUO TELEGRAPH— COI'IKIGBT.) (Received August 31, 5.j p.m.) LONDOX, August 30. Tiie following are, the latest quotations of Government securities compared with the prices ruling on August 23: Last week. This week.

GENERAL MERCHANDISE GROCERIES After Ihe busy period, last week business in the wholesale grocery trade has quietened down. Prospects for September are very encouraging, and already forward orders for Christmas goods arc being booked in fair volume for many lines. Abundant supplies of fresh eggs are now available, and this position will continue until after Christmas. Tea With an entry of 20,200 chests the tea auction of Indian teas held at Calcutta last week drew a full bench of buyers. There was a fair entry of Assam s and Dooars, but these showed a falling off in quality. Owing to a weaker London demand leaf teas fell three to six pies for most lines, whilst other grades showed heavier reductions. Sellers refused in many cases to accept the lower market, and consequently withdrawals were heavy. Shortly after this auction prices in London finned again. Average prices obtained at this sale ran as follows: — Broken Orange Pekoe: Common, 0 annas; medium, 9 annas 9 pies; good, up to 15 annas. Broken Pekoe: Common, 3 annas 9 pics; medium, 9 annas 3 pies; good, up to It I annas. Tannings: Common, 8 annas 6 pies; medium, 9 annas; good, up to 14 annas. The weaker London tea market had its effect on Ceylon teas, and at last week's auction in Colombo commons and mediums dropped two to four cents. Prices obtained at this sale were, on an average:—Broken Orange Pekoe: Common, 56 cents; medium, 75 to 78 cents; fine, 1 rupee 25 cents. Broken Pekoe: Common, 54 cents; medium, 69 cents; fine, 80 to 85 cents. Broken teas: Common, 52 cents; medium. 54 cents. The Java market last week had fallen slightly. According to news by cable, it was showing signs of weakness, although no prices were quoted. Cloves A Singapore quotation by cable advises a rising market for cloves, and prompt shipment via Australia is available only at an advance on previous quotations of 10s per cwt. Barley-Maize Quotations received this week from Melbourne are: Maize .'Ss 6d, English barley 2s 2d, Cape 2s, all f.o.b. Salt A circular from Adelaide quotes favourable prices for fine and coarse salt, also agricultural salt. Packing besides the usual hundredweight bags can be had in sacks, 12 to the ton, in all grades, at 3s a ton reduction. Considerable quantities of this salt are now coming to the Dominion, as it offers a handy source of supply. Preserving" Jars New lists have been issued by the Dominion makers for all grades and sizes of jam jars and preserving jars. Spread delivery is offered covering the next six months. Prices are on a par with those ruling last season. Prunes A cheap quotation lias been issued this week for three favourite sizes of Australian prunes in 281b boxes. These lines offer an opportunity to buyers who arc wanting stocks before'the arrival of new Californian prunes. Clothes Pegs Shipments just to hand of Canadian clothes pegs disclose costs higher than was anticipated; consequently the added value will have to be passed on to buyers. Raisins .San Francisco advised this week, that the market there for prompt, dispatch for seeded and seedless raisins was a trifle higher than last week, but offers based on last week's prices would probably be confirmed. One shipper has issued a price list disclosing a small advance, which con.'irnfs the report.

Singapore Markets There is nothing to report on the Singapore markets, and all lines such as pines, pepper, sago, and tapioca are practically stationary in price. Verylittle interest is being taken so far in this market, and no buying of importance will take place until toward the end of September. Currants and Almonds Mediterranean reports received here by cablegram from London, state that currants are easier for new crop due to leave in the middle of September, but almonds are firmer, and prices have advanced for Sicilian and Jordans by 2s Gd per cwt. PRICE OF GOLD HECOKD FOli LONDON MARKET LONDON, August 30. Gold (a fine ounce) is quoted at £T Os 3d, the highest price on record here. Recent quotations are:—
