KENNEL NOTES

i iJty CALEB.; i ;(,>uf)'iea tor anawt-r in tin* column euoa:d | b.,' addressed to "Caleb," caro "The Press," | (. hrißti'lmrcli, and to ensure publication on j Aiu- .Saturday must be floceh'ed not later tiun (ho Thursday preceding.] j News of a particularly interesting j mating of the popular Wire Fox Ter- , ricr reached mc this week from Mr W.; M. Jack, of the Ryburn Kennels,; Christehurch. His dam Roscrea Re-j vcille lias been mated to the well-1 known ch. Talavera Adonis (im-j ported), and if breeding has any bear-j ing on the progeny they should be a ] credit to the Ryburn Kennels, for j champions abound in the pedigrees oi ; both sire and dam. Roscrea Reveille! is a daughter of ch. Ryburn Reliable ; and ch. Ryburn Ravenna, who were j both bred by Mr Jack and are now in) Australia. Ravenna is a daughter of i Charming Caree (imported) by ch. j Gedling Safeguard, the former being , mated to Safeguard before leaving i England. ' Mr R. O. Johnson, of St. Albans,; reports the mating of his Smooth Fox | Terrier bitch Rosemoyne Pasty to his i good dog Rosemoyne Romance, and as ; this breed is always in demand Mr ; Johnson should experience no difficulty in disposing of the puppies. A healthy litter of eight Alsatian puppies, four dogs and four bitches, j was recently whelped by Dawn Dinier j of Clutha, owned by Mr L. E. Law- : rence. of Dunedin. The youngsters were sired by Mrs Simon's ch. Knight of Lorraine and already show great promise. Oamaru is losing two enthusiastic Cocker breeders, the Misses Christie and Parker, owners of the Belmont Kennels, who will shortly leave there to take up residence in Whangarei, where they will carry on their interesting work. Ft is announced that Mr H. Hindi- : cliff, of Wellington, has agreed to act j ) a:-, judge of all breeds at the annual j show of the Canterbury Kennel Club, ; which is to be held in November. : Injury to the Stifle Joint j The stifle joint in a dog appears to j be a particularly weak one, and is very liable to injury, due to slipping, | or twisting of the leg, when running ' swiftly over rough ground or while j playing in an excited mood with its j kennel mates. This arises from the groove in which the patella (knee' bone) works being very shallow. ! An injury to the stifle joint causes | the dog to be very lame, and he often j carries the leg when walking; if he puts it down, he stands with only the j points of the toe touching the ground, i and placed just behind the other leg. | The joint becomes swollen, more par- I ticularly on the inside, and is very j painful. ! These injuries always take some ! considerable time to cure and require j absolute rest for about three weeks. | A bad injury to this joint means the dog being lame very often for two or even three months. If the case is taken in hand at once, hot poppy-head fomentation is the best i application, and should be applied two j or three times a day. After three or j four days of this treatment the follow- ! irig liniment may be applied night and I morning ail round the joint, but par- j ticularly on the inside, where th-3 principal swelling is: Chloroform, four drachms: tincture hyoscyamus, four drachms: spirits of camphor, one j ounce; soap liniment, two ounces. When the inflammation has passed the dog often continues to walk lame for some time, owing to the joint being stiff. This condition is relieved by j gently and firmly massaging the whole i circumference of the joint, rubbing in iodex. In all cases of injury to the stifle joint, the dog should be, for the first two or three weeks, kept absolutely cuici. and then gentle walking exer-

cises may be given. L.ulcr it is u good plan to "give the dog swimming exercise, providing the weather is suitable, . as this provides exercise without weight-bearing or concussion.
