HARBOUR BOARD

CITY'S REPRESENTATION PORT CHRISTCHURCH LEAGUE'S MEETING A decision to ask the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and the Christchurch Citizens' Association to co* operate in the endeavour to have the city's representation on the Lyttelton Harbour Board increased by two members was reached at the meeting last evening of the Port Christchurch League. Mr J. Longlon presided over a Email attendance of members. The report of the secretary (Mr R. B. Cotton) stated that members of Parliament had been written to asking them to support the Lyttelton Harbour Board in its endeavour to have a bill passed giving the city of Christchurch more representation on the Harbour Board. This bill has been shelved and nothing further had been done. Members were urged to do all in their power to arouse public interest in the objects of the league. Since the finding of the Access to Sea Investigation Committee's report, a lethargy had come over the public regarding the Port Christchurch scheme. Mr Longton said that the bill spon* sored by Mr H. T. Armstrong, M.P., which had been shelved, provided for an increase of only one city member. Unless the league agitated strongly the whole project would be dropped. He understood the bill had passed tht first reading but had never been printed. The secretary reported that the conditions imposed by the Minister for Internal Affairs for the holding of art, unions made it impossible successfully to hold an art union to raise funds lor the league.
