An electrically welded warship for the British Navy has been launched. This is the destroyer Forester, built at Cowes. A welded ship is one in which no rivets have been used—a system which ensures a considerable saving of weight. The plates of the hull, instead of overlapping and being held together in the overlap by hundreds of rivets, are "glued" together with a flux melted at terrific heat with an electric arc. The amount of flux weighs a fraction of an ounce; the scores of rivets in the same area would weigh several pounds. Experiments in electric welding have been carried on in British shipbuilding yards for the last 10 years.
