A BLOODLESS CASTRATOR A demonstration will be given at the Addington market on Wednesday of a new bloodless castrator and tailer lor lambs, invented by Mr C. A. Mowat, of Cheviot. The principle of the instrument is that after removing the tail it presses together the skin of the stump and stops bleeding. Mr Mowat, who has used the instrument for two years on his own flock, claims that it has reduced the incidence of disease after tailing by making a clean wound which heals up more rapidly than that made by ordinary methods. He has also found that lambs docked by this methqjj do not lose condition, and are not ' even checked in their fattening. He has been able to get a bigger proportion of his lambs away fat than by the usual docking by knife.

Further advance in the control of weeds in corn crops by chemicals has been made in this year's trials by the Department of Agriculture at Leeds University, where in tests of various materials" in a wheat crop, a comparatively unknown substance has shown up to advantage. This is ammonium thiocyanate, which is used as a 7 per cent, solution at the rate of 40 gallons an acre. It is a by-product of gas works, and up to the present has had no commercial value. Although there can be little doubt as to the success ot the ammonium thiocyanate in checking weeds, the experiment will be carried further to ascertain the exact effects of the treatment on the yield of corn and straw, particularly in view of the fact that on a plot dressed at 80 gallons an acre the straw was shorter and the heads <m the green state) less bold than when only 40 gallons an acre was used.

Mr L. Burkard (president of the German Australian Chamber of Commerce, Sydney) states that the chamber had been informed by official sources in Germany that Germany, during the current wool season, would not purchase wool from Australia unless the present trade balance of 1.5 in favour of Australia was considerably improved. "The German Government is forced into this position through shortage of exchange caused by the adverse trade balance," Mr Burkard added.
