KAIKOURA NEWS

The seven-a-side hockey match played as a curtain-raiser to the Kai-koura-Ashburton match, between the Old Girls of Woodford House and Kaikoura, was drawn after a hard-fought game, each side scoring a goal. Miss P. Grigg scored for Woodford House and Miss Nellie Pluck for Kaikoura, Messrs W. Rothwell (manager of the ] Ashburton team) and R. E. Clark were the referees. The Kaikoura Bowling Club's salad bowl competition was drawn at the Drill Hall on Thursday night, the winning number being two, held by Brian i Burgess. The captain of the Australian team conducted the drawing. The members of the Australian touring team were the guests at a dance held on Thursday evening, when about 350 people were present at the Drill Hall. Music was played by Broadway's orchestra (Christchurch) and extras were given by Misses Mary Mackle and Mary Wareham. Mr H. Taylor was master of ceremonies. The members of the Australian hockey team were entertained at dinner at the Adelphi Hotel on Thursday night, when upwards of 50 hockey players were present. Mr F. J. Monk (county chairman) presided. Seated next to him were Messrs W. Rothwell, and J. E. Elliott (manager and captain respectively of the Australian team). Following the loyal toast, proposed by the county chairman, Mr W. A. Ferry proposed the toast of "The Australian Team." Mr Elliott, in replying, congratulated the Kaikoura players on their excellent game and said it was the fastest his team, had played in the Dominion. Other toasts were:—"The New Zealand Hockey Association," proposed by Mr A. B. Clark and replied to by Mr Le Lievre; "The Umpires," proposed by Mr J. Allen and responded to by Mr R. Robson; "The Kaikoura Team," proposed by Mr M. Stening and replied to by Mr F. Taylor; "The Ladies," proposed bv Mr R. Taylor and replied to by Mr R. ShirrefTs: "The Chairman," proposed bv Mr E. Cullen and replied to by Mr Monk.
