AUSTRALIANS BEAT KAIKOURA BOTH TEAMS PLAY WELL TO THE ratbS.) KAIKOURA, August 30. The touring Australian hockey team beat a team representing Kaikoura by 6 goals to 0 at Kaikoura to-day. There was a record attendance, and both teams played well. The weather was gloriously fine. With sunshine, absence of wind, and the mountains covered with snow, the country was looking at its best. The Kaikoura players put in some solid practice before the game, and looked fit. The Australian forwards, led by Allan and Stenning, were extended more than in any match, and keeping in good position they scored most of the goals. Owing to the vigorous play of the Kaikoura team the Australians were kept out from the goal on several occasions. Irvine was the pick of the halves, and Elliott (captain), and Rothwell, of the backs. The outstanding player on the ground for Kaikoura was M. K. Wareham, at fullback. He was ably supported by W. A. Ferry (goalkeeper). Kaikoura played a better game than the score indicated, and the visitors were surprised. The first score was secured by Stenning. The next to score was Allan, the goalkeeper being drawn out by Stenning and Elliott. Just before half-time a splendid shot by Allan beat the goalkeeper, the score then being: Australia 3, Kaikoura 0. Lester was the fourth scorer. Good positional play by Australia again drew the goalkeeper, who cleared, but a second attempt by Allan secured the fifth goal., The final score came from a combined effort by the Australian forwards, Lester passing to Allan, who finished off in an open goal. An exciting piece of play took place when a penalty bully was taken in the Kaikoura circle, K. Wareham (Kaikoura) beating Lester, the Australian. The final score was: Australia 6, Kaikoura 0. The ground was stated to be the best that the Australians have yet played on, being as near as possible to what they are accustomed to in Australia. Messrs H. J. Lockhart and A. Robson were the referees. The county chairman (Mr F. J. Monk) extended a welcome to the visitors. He expressed gratitude that Kaikoura had been included in the itinerary, and said he appreciated very much that Kaikoura people were to be given an opportunity of watching an inter-Dominion game. He hoped they would thoroughly enjoy their stay in the district. Messrs Rothwell, Lee. and Irvine returned thanks.
