SENTENCES COMMUTED
ABORIGINES FOUND GUILT* > OF MURDER (Received August 30, 11.20 p.m.) DARWIN, August 30. Advice has been received that the death sentence on the aborigine Takiar, for the murder of Constabltt McColl, lias been commuted to imprisonment for life. Another aborigine named Butcher, who had also been sentenced to death, also had his sentence cogmuted to life imprisonment. He was convicted of the murder of William Jennings last January. A Melbourne message says the High Court granted leave to Takiar to appeal against his conviction. His counsel informed the judge at Darwin that Taltiar's confession that he killed Constable McColl was untrue.
