DUNEDIN HOUSING SCHEME
. -ffiMODEL SUBURB PLANNED ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM./ j DUNEDIN, August 28. ' Under the Unemployment Boards housing subsidy scheme, a syndicate, assisted by the Dunedin City Corporation in the construction of a street, has arranged to build 60 houses at Forbury. For the most part they will be four, five, and six-roomed residences. Eighty per cent, of the houses will be constructed in brick, and a thoroughfare 60 feet wide will be complete with grass plots on each side, adorned with trees. No two houses in the area will be exactly alike. CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL'S EXPERIENCE The Christchurch City Council fs not likely to support any housing scheme for Christchurch, according to a statement made by Mr E. H. Andrews, chairman of the town planning committee, to a representative of "Th 3 Press" yesterday, commenting on the proposed housing scheme in Dunedin. Mr Andrews said that the Christchurch City Council had 146 houses built with borrowed money and today many of them were back in the council's hands. To date more than £SOOO had been lost in interest and sinking fund payments and £2OOO in rates. In addition the council had probably spent £2OOO in repairs and legal expenses. The total loss was probably about £IO,OOO, and that would ultimately become a charge on the ratepayers.
