HAYDN BIOGRAPHIES
TO THJfi «olroa 0* THE VABS9. Sir, —In your reviewer's very able and interesting article on recent books about Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, and Bach he mentioned that there were only "two modest lives of Haydn available." That is not quite correct, as there are several; but unfortunately they are tucked away in various volumes. For those who are interested I feel that attention should be drawn to Parry's excellent and authoritative Haydn in his "Studies of Great Composers." Others I find on my shelves are by Haweis (very good); Ferris (new and interesting information); D. G. A. Fox (critical study); B. E. Woolf (fairly detailed information); Tyler (inspired by Haweis); and Haddon (entertaining). Mention may also be made of C. F. Pohl's article in Grove's "Dictionary of Music and Musicians."—Yours, etc., B. August 21). IJKM.
