KITE-FLYING
ANNUAL COMPETITION IN HAGLEY PARK More than 200 kites of all shapes, sizes, and colours flew over Hagley Park yesterday morning in the annual jkite-flying competition for boys promoted by the management of the Majestic Theatre. Though the breeze from the east was never very strong, many of the entrants reached their limit, and the record height was reached by a small and fragile-looking kite attached to •400 yards of cotton. Although it had been announced that the competition was for boys, many girls were to be seen among the competitors, and Mr C. Haigh, manager of the theatre, who acted as judge, explained that he had been forced to include one of their number among the prize-winners, as she had flown her kite so well. Height reached and general stability ■were the two main points considered. Mr Haigh found his task a difficult one, and he took more than an hour to choose the winners. It was the steadiness of the winner's kite that earned him first prize, though he failed to reach the height of the catry placed eecond. Several kites failed to leave the ground or stay up for any appreciable time. As Mr Haigh gave sway the prizes a great crowd of young boys and girls gathered to cheer the winners. The first prize was a silver Boyproof watch, the second a fountain pen, and the third and fourth prizes were free tickets to "The Last Round-Up." The placings were:— Noel Hewings (Sydenham School), J. Chaston, 225 St. Martins' road '.'. 2 Louis Alsweiler, 59 Mandeville road .. .. ..3 Bdna Wilkie, 49 Mowbray street .. 4
