ASHBURTON FESTIVAL The judging at the Ashburton Competition Society's tenth annual festival was concluded last evening, when there was a large attendance. Chief interest was centred in the piano championship for the Tucker trophy, which was won by Miss Marjorie McDowell i (Dunedin). It was announced that Mr R. J. Tucker had chosen Liszt's Sonata in IB minor as the test piece for next I year's championship. During the evening the judge of the dancing (Miss Lorna Budge, of Dunedin) gave exhibitions of tap dancing. The festival will be concluded to-day, when one demonstration concert will be given this afternoon and another this evening. The judge (Mr E. Jenner) said the section was one of the most interesting he had judged at any competitions. With a good healthy direct rhythm, Miss McDowell gave a fine rendering of the test piece. LEESTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The annual musical and elocutionary competitions, under the auspices of the Leeston Presbyterian Church, opened at the Town Hall on Monday evening, when there was a full house. Although the entrieß were not numerous, the itemß proved interesting and the standard was good. The judges were Mr Sidney Williamson, D.E.C.M. (music), and Miss R. Boot, L.T.C.L. (elocution). Dr. W. A. Johnston was secretary. Two novelty items were given, a character duet by Bernadine McCabe and Heather Penrose, and a tap dance by the Bennett sisters.
