COLLEGE DEBATE
+—~ DIALECTIC SOCIETY AND LAW STUDENTS Debating the question whether it would be in the best interests of the British Empire to enter into an alliance with Japan, the Canterbury College Law Students' Society last evening defeated the college Dialectic Society by a narrow margin. The Dialectic Society was represented by Messrs W. Wah. R P. Taylor, and E. Wall, and the law students by Messrs C. Hart, H. Thompson, and J. Williams. The subject of the debate was the one selected for the forthcoming Joynt Scroll contest, to be held in Dunedin, among the four colleges of the university; and the Canterbury College team will be chosen from those who spoke last, evening. The two best speakers in the opinion of the judge. Mr G. Lawn. were Messrs C. Hart and W. Wah, who were placed first equal.
Y.M.C.A. CLASS The last meeting of the Christ - church Young Men's Christian Association debating class was well attended. The evening was devoted to questions which were submitted to the chairman. Mr O. Mathews, who appointed the speakers lor each. The secretary fur the evening was Mr B. McNair. Next Tuesday the class will meet the Returned Soldiers' Association of Christchurch in a debate, "That the Administration of the Unemployed Fund is not in the Best Interests of the Community." The team will consist of Messrs J. "Walker. G. Mottram. and J. B. Pyc. Next Thursday the class will debate with the St. Mary's Club, "That Capital Punishment Should be Abolished," the team being Messrs B. McNair. A. McNeil, and O. Mathews. The club decided to take part in the combined debating clubs' dance to be held next Wednesday sm the .Tellicoe Hall.
