O GREYMOUTH MAGISTRATE'S COURT (SPECIAL TO THE MESS.) GREYMOUTH, July 10. Mr H. Morgan, S.M., presided over the usual weekly sitting of the Magis- | trate's Court, at Greymouth. j For driving an unregistered motor--1 car, George Broughton, was fined 7s :6d and costs. For riding an unlighted j cycle, James Aitken was fined 5s and costs. William Thomas Arthur, charged with driving a motor-bus over a railway crossing when the line was not clea.", was fined £2 and costs. I As a sequel to a police raid ou Revinglon's Hotel, Greymouth, in the evening of June 23, a number of 'licensing charges were laid. Twelve first offenders charged with being unlawfully on the premises after hours were fined 15s and costs and one second offender was fined 25s and costs. Mrs Annie Walker, licensee of the hotel, who pleaded guilty to selling liquor after hours, was fined £5 and costs, and Roy Crooks, a barman, who 'pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully supplying liquor, was fined £2 and costs. George Merriman, another barman at the hotel, pleaded not guilty ! to charges of aiding and abetting the licensee. The police alleged that Merriman was standing at the front main door of the hotel, and on the approach of the police rang a bell to warn those who might be inside. The magistrate held the evidence to be insufficient, and dismissed the charge. Influenza Outbreak Improved attendances are reported in the Greymouth schools to-day. The improvement is more marked in the secondary than in the primary schools, where there are still a large number of absentees. A few of those away have measles. Amongst adults there is a good deal of influenza, and many firms are working with depleted stafls. Rugby Football The following team has been selected to represent the West Coast against Buller, in a return home and home match, on Saturday next:—G. Gilbert; C. Schroder, A. Agnew, A, King; A. Fong, S. Hendry; R. B. Scandrett; J. Mahoney, A. Bowes, M. Kelly, W. McNeight, M. Thomson, F. Frcitas, R. King, and L. Hughes. E. Pfahlert (wing) and M. Scandrett (forward) were not available.

REEFTON RUGBY LEAGUE (Sl'liClAi 10 'XBB FEKSS.) REEFTON. July 10. The representative Kugby League match between Inangahua and Wtest Coast was played on the Reefton racecourse. The weather was bad, and' in spite of a greasy ball, the exhibition of football was excellent. The game was won by Inangahua by 25 points to 8. For the winners, Scott, King, Morris, and McKcnzie in the backs, and Morel, Smith, and August, forwards, played well. Personal j Mr J. McEwin, battery superintendent at the Blackwater mines has recovered from injuries suffered in an accident. i Mr J. Kearns, of the National Bank staff, Wellington, is at present in Reefton, with his wife and family, spending his annual leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs T. Kearns. Accident in Mine Whilst working at the Surprise Coal Mine on Wednesday, Mr L. Ecklund received a severe blow on the face through a piece of hard coal coming away from the face. The wound required several stitches, and Mr Ecklund had a narrow escape from losing an eye. Influenza The influenza epidemic is particularly bad in Reefton, and the very cold weather has not helped those suffering. Magistrate's Court Mr H. Morgan, S.M., presided, over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Judgment was given for plaintiff with costs in a ease in which Stanley Austin claimed £4 15s from Claude Reeve. Warden's Court A sitting of the warden's court was held in the courthouse, before Mr H. Morgan, warden. Colin Anson Gillett proceeded against William James Morris for the cancellation of special quartz license No. 7591. Plaintiff applied under the Mining Act, which required the defendant to employ 14 men on the area, whereas no work had been done. The defendant submitted that: (1) The plaintiff had failed to prove that practically no work had been done On the area during the material time specified by his claim; (2) that because of

the special circumstances of the case* the Minister for Mines had stipulated " that special conditions be inserted " in the license in dispute, modifying -.- those imposed by the statute; and <3>" that plaintiff was making use of in- ;;, formation obtained by him from defendant, when engaged by defendant . in a confidential capacity. The warden.;'. adjourned the case for further evidence to be taken. The following applications were granted:—Arthur Beban, for two ordinary prospecting licenses each over 100 acres in Block 111., Mawheraiti , S.D.; John Doolan, for ordinary prospecting license over 30 acres at Wai- .' munga (granted subject to conditions • agreed upon with one, Alan McLen- - nan, and filed with application); Henry , Jones to surrender absolutely special dredging claim license No. 7776. The following applications were recommended:—Murray Creek Gold Mining Company, Ltd., for reduction ; of rent on four claim licenses for • ; period of six months; J. A. S. Marris, for an extension of time within which application No. 316/33 for a special dredging claim may be finally disposed ! of. Tom Learmont applied for a special dredging claim license over 19 acre* in Block XI., Mawheraiti S.D., which was granted subject to compensation to Flynn and Pettersen being satisfactorily arranged. The application of A. Walker and E. B. Comerford for two special quartz claim licenses, each over 100 acres, in Block XI., Reefton S.D., was adjourned for survey, Mr C. A. Gillett being approved as surveyor. Their application for a tunnel license length 26 chains was granted.
