FUNERAL

— MR D. A. ASHBY Many former representative cricketers attended the funeral of Mr David Alexander Ashby, a Canterbury,representative player from 1875 until 1890, which left his home, 21 Riccarton road, for St. Peter's Churchyard, Riccarton, yesterday afternoon. A service was conducted at the church by the Rev. H. T. York. The chief mourners were Mr Maurice Ashby (son) and Mrs Maurice Ashby, Mrs P. J. Palmer (daughter) and Mr Palmer, and Miss F. Ashby (daughter). The jiall-bearers from the hearse to the church were employees of Wood Bros., Ltd., flourmillers. The bearers from the church to the graveside were Messrs R. Barrie, J. D. Lawrence, W. Pearce, H. Lawrence, A. Cant, and P. Mansell, former representative cricketers. Floral tributes were sent by the following:—Mother and family, Maurice and Stella, Irene and Dorothy, Haddrell family, directors of Messrs Wood Bros., Ltd., employees of Wood Bros., Canterbury Cricket Association, Imperial Bowling Club, Mr H. Deal, Albert and Elsie, Mr and Mrs Nightingale, old members of the Midland Cricket Club, Mr J. L. Ashworth and family, T. W. and D. Reese, Mr A. Cant and family, Mrs Beach and Ivy, Misses V. and M. Cameron, Mr and Mrs Rolandson, Mr J. Close, Mrs Miller and Gertie, and Mr and Mrs Dale. Villagers of Kormakiti, in Cyprus, are descended from Maronites who fled from Syria during the Crusades. Their Arabic has since become so mingled with Greek and Turkish that now neither Syrians nor Cypriots can understand it, and interpreters are necessary when the villagers trade with other parts of the island.
