♦— — WOUNDED SOLDIERS' SOCIETY EIGHTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT (special to tuu pbess.) NELSON, May 31, Presenting the eighteenth annual report to the Nelson Sick and Wounded Soldiers' Fund Society atsj* meeting held this evening, fifty's advisory board stated that it did so with pleasure, and a feeling of satisfaction that much good had been accomplished. The lack of steady employment among the returned meii o£ the district had been responsible for most of the society's work, and the policy of the board in augmenting the earnings of men on relief work proved most satisfactory. It was regretted that many re , turned men had to go to hospital for treatment for disabilities attributable to war experience. In many cases the need for financial assistance had been an urgent problem, rendering assistance necessary. Returned men ot other districts seeking employment in Nelson continued to give the board considerable anxiety. The contributions received monthly from the National War Funds Council made possible a small measure of help to those men. This year the advisory board sent three boys to be trained at flock house, making the total five since the scheme was instituted. Four had now completed their training and had been placed on suitable farms. Regret was expressed at the prolonged illness of Mr Horatio Everett. The treasurer's report showed the total assets to be £7828. Payments to soldiers and dependents were £1709 against £2lll the previous year. The Regiment The Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast Regiment was at full strength on the old establishment basis, and new establishment allowed for the recruiting of an additional 51 in the infantry and 80 more in the mounted rifles Eleven volunteers for the infantry joined the regiment in May, making the present infantry strength 371. The new scale allows for an increase to 412. The present strength of the mounted riflee is 248, the new establishment allowing for an increase to 328. Engineer Injured Mr G. Barltrop, engineer in charge of the Nelson Harbour Board's dredge Te Wakatu, broke a leg in an accident on the dredge. Mr Barltrop noticed that one of the trolleys was not running as usual, and went to inspect the trouble. The winchman, not seeing the engineer, started the trolley, which ran into Mr Barltrop's leg, breaking it near the ankle. The Nelson free ambulance conveyed the injured man to the Nelson Hospital, where he is reported to be making satisfactory progress.
