SOUTH CANTERBURY RACES

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING Delightful weather favoured the South Canterbury Jockey Club for its May meeting, which was held on Saturday, at Washdyke. Bright sunshine tempered the keenness of the temperature and interesting racing was enjoyed by a large attendance. Tailored suits were much in evidence on the lawn, brown and blue being the most favoured colours. Among the guests were:— Mrs Donald Grant (wife of the president), who wore a fawn angora tweed suit and a light fawn angora felt hat. Mrs W. WEDDINGS BRICKELL—WOOLER On Saturday evening, St. Mary's Church, Merivale, was beautifully decorated with chrysanthemums and Japanese maples for the wedding of Shirley Margaret Wooler, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs F. C. Wooler, Brown's road, St. Albans, to Maurice Crawford, eldect son of Mr and Mrs H. A. Brickell, Dyer's Pass road, Cashmere. The Rev. A. K. Warren performed the ceremony, and Mr A. Worsley played the wedding music. A frock of cameo pink Duchess satin was worn By the bride, who was given away by her father. The long skirt formed a train at the back lined with matching georgette, and a halfsash caught from the side seams at the waistline was finished w.ith a rose of ring velvet with silver leaves. The frock was made on Empire lines with slashed, puffed sleeves of elbowlength. Her cameo pink veil was beautifully embroidered and held with a silver band and wreath of pink orange blossom, and she carried a sheaf of orange arum lilies. Miss Joy Wooler, Miss Dorothy Kernahan and Miss Betty Smithson attended as bridesmaids. Their uncommon frocks of plaicT taffetas were in Shades of white and red, green and lemon, and pink and blue respectively. Large upstanding frills, faced with organdie, formed the sleeves and continued across the .front and back of the throat to form the high necklines, and long loose panels, forming a sash effect at the back of the waistlines, were finished at the hems with three flared frills. A circular flare was inset from the knees on the left of each frock in front. The torsades of velvet which the attendants wore in their hair were of colours to match their frocks, and sprays of flowers to tone brightened their organdie muffs. Mr R. A. Young was best man, and the groomsman was Mr lan Brickell. At the reception, held at the home of the bride's parents, Mrs Wooler received the guests wearing a frock of pomegranate red ring velvet made' with a cowl neckline and long cowled sleeves finished with crystal buttons. Her hat was of matching velvet with an upturned brim at the side. She carried red carnations and roses. The bridegroom's mother wore a handsome frock of moss green ring velvet, and a matching velvet toque. She also caried red carnations and roses. For travelling, the bride wore a tailored suit of grey flannel, a blouse of red checked taffetas, and a grey stitched hat to match.

MAY—O'DONNELL The wedding was celebrated recently at St. Michael's Church, Cronadun, of Kathleen Mary, eldest daughter of the late Mrs O'Donnell, and of Mr T. O'Donnell, of Cronadun, to Roy, second son of the late Mr E. A. May, and of Mrs May, of Cambridge. The Rev. Father Spring performed the ceremony, and Mrs A. Stanley was the organist. The bride was escorted by her father through a guard of honour, formed by the Children of Mary. She wore a frock of pink lace cut on classical lines, and made with a high neck, and long sleeves puffed above the elbows. The long skirt flared to form a train, and was inset with godets of velvet bands. Her appliqued veil was worn off the face and caught with orange blossom buds, and she carried a trailing bouquet of pink and white flowers. Miss Kathleen O'Malley (Wellington), a cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid, and Miss Tei'ese Blackadder attended as flower-girl. Mr Frank O'Donnell was best man. After the ceremony, a reception was hold at the home of Mr and Mrs O'Malley, and later, Mr and Mrs R. May left for the north.
