NEW BRIGHTON NOTES

BOWLS The committee of the New Brighton Bowling Club has decided to close the green for the season to-day with a rinks tournament. Independent Order of Rechabites At a meeting of the Star of New Brighton Tent the Chief Ruler. Bro. F. T Tindall, presided. A motion of sympathy was passed to Sister Goodman in a recent bereavement. Members of the New Brighton Novice Cycle Club were entertained, games and competitions being held. Miniature Rifle Club The following scores were made at the weekly shoot by members of the New Brighton Men's Miniature Rifle Club:—D. Bright 70, F. Whiteley 69, B. Penrose 69, H. Ragg 69, V. Tims CO, J Miller 69, T. Hobbs 68, C. Priest GB, D Turner 67, M. Neumann 67, P. Miller 67. H. A. Ragg was the winner of the handicap competition for the prize given by the Rev. D. B. Ashford. Personal Miss Violet Bargrove, of the Church Missionary Society's hospital, Hangchow, China, who has been on furlough with her parents, Mr and Mrs R. Bargrove, will leave this morning for the south on work connected with the society. Boroujrh Work Progress has been made with the formation of the Rawhiti croquet green, additional clay having been carted to the section. Grading has been done in Racecourse road, Saltaire street, Richmond terrace, and Estuary road. Work is being continued on the formation of the retaining wall along the river bank from Bligh street to Herring Bay. The formation of the Esplanade at Fox and Beatty streets is being pushed forward. Relief Workers The number of unemployed working in the borough this week is 351, an increase of four on last week's figure. Building Permits Building permits issued to March 31 total 127, to the value of £13,032 Bs. To March 31, 1933, 04 permits valued at £5704 were issued. In 1932 the number was also 64, to the value of £6786 10s, while in 1931 the value of the 68 permits issued was £10,938. The seven permits issued in February and March were of a total value of £4Bl and included dwellings in Pine avenue and Baker street, three washhouses, two garages, and a shed. Social Evenings The New Brighton Bowling Club's weekly progressive whist lournament resulted in wins for W. Larcombc and F. Barnett. At the New Brighton Croquet Club's bridge afternoon, held at the residence of Mrs C. Mazey, Lonsdale | street, Mrs Alee Dey was the winner. The New Brighton sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association held a euchre party and dance on Wednesday. Prizes were won by Mrs Brimmer "and Miss O'Neill. Dance music was played by Mrs F. Fuller, j and Mr R. J. Poller was master ol ceremonies. The school committee's weekly euchre party, held on Thursday, attracted a good attendance. Supper arrangements were made by Mesdames H. O. Brooks and M. Moses. The placings were:—Women: Mrs H. Gilkes 1, Mesdames B. Frost and it. Jl. Hanna 2 equal, Mrs Jackson 4. Men: Messrs Reg. Campbell and .J. Morton 1 equal, Mr E. F. I'hilpott 3. The competition was won by Mr G. Millar. Mothers' Union The monthly meeting of St. Faith's branch of the Mothers' Union was held on Thursday. The lirst service of the wav of renewal movement was held and Ih-j address read by the enrolling member, Mrs T. M. Curnow. ■ A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the laie Mrs H. Saville, who for a number of years was secretary. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Evans and Fitchctl. Talking Pictures "Hell Below," Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's sensational drama of submarine adventure, with Robert Montgomery, Waller Huston. Madge Evans, Jimmy Durante, Eugene Palletle, aim Robert Young heading the cast, will be the attraction at the Premier Theatre to-night and Monday only. The picture unfolds a stirring romance amid the thrills of submarine lighting, torpedoing of destroyers, the destruction of an armed Italian town and other spectacular incidents. NORTH BEACH Personal Mr and Mrs A. Clville <Wairnale) arc the guests of Mrs V. W. Colville, the Esplanade. Mrs N. McGiilivray i Osborne terrace), who has been spending a month's holiday in the North Island, will arrive home to-morrow morning. Miss Nancy Marriott and Miss Olive Sands (Marriott's road), who have been visiting Ashburton, have returned home. Miss Stevenson (Travis's road) is on a holiday visit to the North Island. Mrs A. E. Cossar. who has been the guest, of Mrs C. G. Cossar (Marriott's road), has returned to her home in Timaru. School Committee Elections The annual meeting of householders will be held on Monday, April JO. The nominations for the North Beach School Committee will close with the chairman (Mr A. Florance) on Monday evening. ft is understood that all the present committe, with the exception of Mr W. S. Bussell. are seeking re-election. Mr A. E. Marriott (Marriott's road) has been approached to stand, and is considering the request. Several other residents have been approached and it is probable an election will be necessary. The committee to be elected this year will hold office for two years. Baptist ('lunch. The Rev. W. P. M. Lascelles, secretary of the Baptist Union in Neve Zealand paid an official visit, lo the North Beach Church on Thursday evening. The Rev. E. W. Grigg presided. Mr l.ascelles delivered an in- j teresting address on "Discipleship." Social lOveniiiß The social committee of the North Beach Surf Club held its fortnightly "Flag 500" and dance in the Memorial Hall this week. The winners at cards were Mesdames R. Stringer and R. Kennedy, and Mr W. Kennedy. Miss Maisie Ottey played the music for the dance. Messrs h. R. Moore and S. Hamilton were masters of ceremonies for the cards and the dance respectively.
