MODERN PIONEERS
Buffaloes. Adventure and Discovery j in Arnheni Land. By Carl War- 1 burton. In collaboration with W. K. Robertson- Angus and Robertson Limited. 254 pp. (lis net,) When the author and his friend Lawrence Whittaker were demobilised, they decided to explore the possibilities of the Northern Territory of Australia. This book tells the story of their adventures, and tells it extremely well. It describes the difficulties Warburton and his mate had to surmount before ever they reached their holding of six hundred square miles; then describes the everyday work of the buffalo-hunter, and finally draws the threads of the yarn neatly toI gether to make it far better than most fiction. Those ignorant of Arnhem Land will learn with surprise how fertile and potentially productive are its plains, rivers and forests, and will agree with the character in the book who exclaims: "It makes me wild to see this magnificent country neglected las it is!"'
