CAR STRIKES ENGINE OF EXPRESS

GERTRUDE McGEE, aged 47, widow, of Heme Bay, traelure of the elbow and hand; condition not serious. The mo'or-car approached from the we.-tern side of the crossing and the driver. Impey, apparently saw the tram approaching when it was too late for him to Mop. as he turned sharply to the right in an endeavour to avoid a collision. The motor-car struck the i tigine .about six feet behind the front of tin- cowcatcher, and bounced back on to the front of the guard's van immediately behind the engine. The car was struck by each of the six carnages in turn, finishing wrecked partly beneath the last carriage. The train, which was slowing down before stepping at the Waitakere station. was -tepped in its own length. '1 he passengers hastened to the assistance of the eceupams of the car. The four persons wire still in the wrecked car. and clidiculty was experienced in extiicatins them. The train arrived at Auckland three-qu irters of an hour late. Splinters of glass were still scattered about the front of the engine, and it wis found 'hat the air pipe of the braking system had been broken, and a cylinder damaged by the impact. The beading on the right sice of the carriages for practically the whole length of the train was also damaged.
