MAPS IN COUNTRY SCHOOLS

SOME AM IQI ATEI) SPECIMENS Hanging in the board room during a meeting of tlic Canterbury Education Board yesterday were three vtry anliqualed maps of portions of North America. These were found in some of the country schools on the West Coast visited by members of the board recently, and at the meeting it was asked whether such maps were suitable for the instruction of pupils. Mr J. \V. Preen, who opened a discussion on the maps, said that if the onus to supply maps to schools was on the board, better ones ought to be provided than those complained of. Some of the maps at one school on the West Coast were found in the coalhouse, there being no other storing place for them. Air Preen drew attention to the torn and dirty condition of the uld maps displayed in the room. Inspector's Assurance The senior inspector iMr A. McNeil): I have no hesitation in saying that those maps are obsolete and are not suitable for use in schools. If new maps are applied for. the secretary refers the applications to me and I make suitable recommendations. "In many of the schools we went to there were no maps at all and we wore told that teachers in some cases preferred to use atlases," said the chairman, Mr W. P. Spencer. On the assurance of Mr McNeil that such antiquated maps as those which were displayed were not used with the recommendation of the board, members allowed the matter to stand.
