Thompson, of New Plymouth. who will succeed Mr Greenland as branch manager in Christchurch. was born in Dunedin. and lias been in the company's service since his boyhood. He was branch manager in Auckland fur a period after the ; war and was then transferred to New , Pl\mouth. He is known in the company's st rvice as -Shipwreck"' Thompson." having been twice wrecked while at sea on the company's once m the Penmen and once in the Kawatiri in Tasmania. dr I. L. The tonnage of shipping ar- ! rivals increased by -l.ti per cent., com--1 pared with the previous year, and the average net tonnage of shi))s showed I a relative increase. j According to Hie annual report of the secretary, presented to a meeting of the Harbour Board to-night, tlv j total net register tonnaKC ot trading ' \essels entering the port during the ' year ended September ISO was :i,Ga2,7()4, an increase of 159,21.13 tons. For comparison with those ports combining arrivals and departures, the total net register tonnage of trading vessels that arrived and departed from and to overseas and coastal ports dur- , iiiu the year was T,0!!7.4!M. The total trade of the port remained about the same a> for the previous year, the j figures being 1.468.192 tons, compared . with 1. tons. Exports continue ! to increase, but imports show a further though small decline.
