I CHRIST'S COLLEGE V. BOYS' I HIGH SCHOOL f aJJNUAL MATCH COMMENCED ■' —— Tlie annual Ivro-day cricket match | between Christ's College and ChristI church Boys' High School was coml jnenced on the High School grounds, | gtraven road, yesterday, under good | conditions and on a true pitch. The ! light failed badly, however, late in j afternoon. High School made 131 : for three wickets in reply to 190 i scored by Christ's College in its first inning - * Accurate bowling on the na?t of High School, and good fielding, allowed only a few of the College batsmen to .-how form. The top scorer j or Christ's Coliege was T. A. Harpur. with 51- He gave an excellent display, a llf l h' s only mistake was with a ball he mishit for a catch. Alexander scored 45, including two sixes, in excellent style, and Fleetwood made 3 rapid 24. Reynolds and Dickinson, fast bowlers, took most of the wickets. Boys' High School hail scored 131 for three wickets at stumps, and this was due mainly to the steady batting of Shand t65 not out) and Reynolds (61). College won the toss and batted first. After Webb had made five he gave Dawson an easy catch from the right- I handed bowler. Menzies, who. at this ! stage was slightly affected by the j wind. Dickinson sent down some ! fairly fast balls but Fleetwood re- j mained confident against both bowlers. ! When Dickinson was replaced by ' Reynolds. Somerville failed to lift a i bail on the rise and sent a catch to j Menzies. A partnership by Harpur j and Fleetwood produced runs rapidly, i Harpur hit hard any short balls from ; the fast men, cuts and cover drives i sending the ball to the boundary several times. Continually Fleetwood sent Reynolds and Dickinson to the leg boundary, but when the total reached 64 he tipped a ball from Men- I zies and was caught in the slipte by McCann. His score was 24. W. J. Byrne had not scored when he was hurt by a ball which rose rather sharply, and had to retire until he was able to bat again at the fall of a later wicket. Alexander took Byrne's place. Defending well - to the good balls but hitting loose ones hard, either in front of the wicket or behind it, iHarpur reached 50 when he had been in for a little more than an hour. His score contained six four/. A ball from Winfield, right-hand slow-medium bowler, was skied and the batsman was caught at . square leg. by Reynolds. After Jones had been bowled for 10. Byrne resumed liis innings. Alexander had scored 24 when he cocked up to square leg a ball from Reynolds. Dawson, who was midway between the umpire and the batsman, just failed to hold a hard chance. Byrne had scored four when he was dropped at first slip off Winfield. After some good off-strokes Byrne was caught by the wicket-keeper off Dickinson, and six were out for 154. When Ormond had joined him, Alex- : ander hit another six off White, a slow : bowler. In the next over Ormond was bowled by Dickinson, who had now found better length and direction, and was rising from the pitch with some pace. At the luncheon adjournment the score was ICS for eight wickets. The tail-enders contributed '22 more ! runs after lunch.

High School Butting High School commenced poorly, and before a run had been scored. Menzies hit at a full toss from Ormond, missed, and was bowled. Alexander, at the other end, who represented Canterbury in the last match again Wellington, kept the batsmen quiet with accurate slow bowling. When his score was 10, Shand was dropped in the slips by Byrne, off Harpur. Reynolds and Shand scored slowly. but surely, and Alexander tried hard , to induce the batsmen to step forward j and hit. j At the end of the day Shand was I unbeaten, with G5 to his" credit. Reynolds, however, after making 61, lifted a ball from Scott, and Harpur took a good catch. When lie had made two. Harbidge tipped one from Scott, which Webb took behind the wicket, and stumps were drawn with three wickets down for 131. Scores:—
