The Mayor was appointed to represent the council.

The Town Clerk of Christchureh (Mr J. S. Neville) wrote asking if the | council was prepared to make a fur- i ther contribution to the cost of the | McCormack's Bay causeway. The sum of £1770 had been contributed by local bodies, and the expenditure up to January 26 was £lßls. The Lyttelton Borough Council and the Harbour Board had already contributed £SO each. On the motion of Cr. Fenton, seconded by Cr. Miller, it was decided to reply that the council could not make another contribution during ] the present financial year. j The Town Clerk of Christchureh acknowledged receipt of the council's letters requesting the Christchureh City Council to convene a meeting of all local bodies to discuss the whole | question of the cut in relief wages, and stated that the City Council had j acceded to the request, and the desires of the Lyttelton council as to time and j place of the conference were asked. The Town Clerk stated that the conference had been arranged for February 22, at 4 p.m., in the Council Chambers at Christchureh. The Mayor and Cr. Fcnton were appointed to represent the council. Diamond Harbour Works The borough engineer submitted a return of the cost of breaking metal on the roads at Diamond Harbour by relief workers. The works committee recommended that those men whose work was not satisfactory be informed by the borough engineer that unless an improvement was shown their services would be dispensed with. I The Christchureh Unemployment ■ Committee invited the council to pre- j pare a schedule of works for which application might be made to the Unemployment Board for a subsidy, similar to that of the building scheme. The matter was deferred for further consideration. I The Canterbury Drivers' Union asked the council to see that drivers ' in its employ became members of the union. The letter was referred to the borough engineer to bring before the men. Cr. Fenton drew attention to the congested condition of the public cemetery. He moved that the borough engineer report on the number or plots still available and on proposed extensions to the cemetery. The town clerk said that he understood that extensions of the present; cemetery would not be possible. The j land nt the south-eastern end of the cemetery, from which the trees had . been removed, was available for plots. The motion was carried. ) Council Truck for Haymaking The use of the council's steam Iruck ' for moving hay at Diamond Harbour was the subject of explanation at the meeting of the 'Lyttelton Borough Council last evening. Cr. Fenton, chairman of Ihe works committee, asked who had given per- ■ mission to Mr Barnard, the borough engineer, lo use the truck for carting , hay on his own property. Had the Mayor given permission? He thought ' that permission should have been ob- ; taincd from himself, as chairman of works. The Mayor said that he had given permission. Did Cr. Fenton expect to be asked every time the truck was Why did this question ariseover the small bit of work that had been done at Diamond Harbour'.' Mr Barnard had mentioned to the speaker that he thought lie would use the truck while it was available, to move 'the hay from the golf link-;. The full piiec, 8s (id an hour, had been paid for Ihe use of the truck. Cr. Green, who is chairman of the electricity and gas committee, said that each time the department's truck was used for outside work, his permission was first obtained. Cr. Fenton said that it had always ; been the custom to obtain the permission of Ihe chairman of works for the use of the steam truck. He had been asked in the street by several persons if he was aware that the truck had been used for private work at Diamond Harbour. Cr.
