OBITUARY
MR GEORGE B. HEMSLEY Mr George Beaumont Hcmslcy, wlio died at his home at St. Kilda, Dunedin, recently, was born at Tunbridge Wells, England, in 1855. He came to New Zealand in 1875, and joined the Public Works Department a few years later. One of his first undertakings was the supervision of the erection by the Defence Department of the large guns placed at Otago Heads. Shortly after this he supervised the erection of the Law Courts and Supreme Court buildings. He was for several years supervising inspector of the various Government buildings erected in Otago and Southland districts, retiring from the service in 1922 after he had been sent to the Chatham Islands to supervise the erection of the wireless station there. Mr Hemsley's wife died' nine years ago. He is survived by four daughters and one son. MR MURDOCH MCKAY 11-KESS ASSOCIATION TILEGBAiI.) INVERCARGILL, February 12. Watson, aged 92, vice-presi-dent of the Royal Australian Historical Society, and a former president. LCaptain Watson was born in England in 1841. LONDON, February 11. The death has occurred of Mr Washington Merritt Grant Singer, of the sewing machine family. He owned the racehorses Coronach and Orwell. [Mr Singer was born in 1886. He was a member of the Jockey Club and was Sheriff of Wiltshire in J924.]
