' With the temperature in this city \ to-day 14 degrees below zero, the coldest ever recorded by the Weather Bureau, which, incidentally, is celebrating its sixty-fourth birthday, America north of the Rio Grande generally was subjected to unprecedentedly cold weather. Nine persons have been frozen to death so far, and untold suffering has been caused. The weatherdisrupted transport systems by sea and land, and crippled telegraphs and telephones. Many water supply systems were frozen. In the United States temperatures of 54 degrees below zero were recorded, and in Canada there were temperatures of 60 degrees below zero. 1 Heavy snow covered both coun- i tries to points many miles south of < the Mason and Dixon Line.
