The Minister for Education (the Hon. R. Masters) arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday morning and left for Dunedin by train last night. He will return to Christchurch on February 24. Dr. F. V. Bevan-Brown has returned to Christchurch from a holiday in the Southern Lakes district.'
Mr A. L. Macfarlane returned to Christchurch yesterday from Wellington.
Messrs H. Holland, M.P., and P. C. Webb, M.P., arrived in Christchurch from the north on Saturday morning. Mr Norton Francis was among the passengers on the Rangatira on Saturday morning. Among those arriving in Christchurch by the Wahine yesterday morning was the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes. Sir Cecil Leys arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning by the Wahine. Mr N. Wade, of Auckland, president of the New Zealand Kennel Club, and Mr D. D. Wilson, president of the Hamilton Kennel Club, have been selected as two of the five judges in the dog section of the Sydney Royal Show, to be held next faster. Mr T. P. M. Bevan has taken up residence at Remuera, Auckland. Mr Bevan, who is a son-in-law of the late Mr W. A. Briscoe, has come out to New Zealand to assist Mr A,, G. Graham, the managing director of Messrs Briscoe and Company, Ltd., in the general conduct of the business. For the last 14 years Mr Bevan has been with the Shell Oil Company in South China. Members of the staff of the Bank of New South Wales, Auckland, met recently to bid farewell to Mr H» A. Deighton, who has retired after 44 years' service with the bank. On behalf of the staff the manager, Mr F. D. McGovern, presented Mr Deign* ton with an easy chair. Mr Deign* ton joined the bank in 1889 at wanganui and served at several branchel in the North and South Islands. Dur* ing the last 14 years he was sta* tioned at Auckland, acting as reliev ing manager at country branches. Archbishop Mannix, Roman, Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, arrived at Auckland by the Mariposa on Saturday on his way to attend the diamond jubilee celebrations of Archbishop Redwood. He last visited New Zealand m 1924 on the occasion of Archbishop Redwood's golden jubilee. This time he has come early to see more oi the Dominion. Archbishop Mannix is accompanied by Dr. Fox, Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes, the Rev. R. <>> Murphy, rector of Newman College. and others, making a party of 14« —Press Association.
Mr L. R. Austin, manager of the Papanui branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd., who has received notification of his trans* fer to Reefton, was met by a repre* sentative gathering of Papanui business men on Saturday evening in the Oddfellows' Hall, North road. A presentation was made of a suitcase, travelling rug, and a wallet for Mr Austin, and a handbag for Mrs Austin. Mr S. Kruse, who presided, said that although Mr Austin had been in the district during » difficult financial period, he had made many friends, and his departure would be a loss to Papanui. Mr Austin replied suitably. i^/
