VISITORS TO THE CITY

THREE DISTIMiI JS11EI) MEN Three distinguished visitors—the Hon. Alexander Shaw, Sir John Sandcman Allen, M.P., and Major C. H. Douglas—will be staying in Christchurch during the present week. The Hon. Alexander Shaw is chairman of the P. and O. Company and an authority on shipping. He is on an extensive tour of New Zealand, and is expected to arrive in Christchurch on Thursday from Wellington. While in Christchurch lie will confer with the board of the New Zealand Shipping Company. With Lady Margaret Shaw and their daughter. Miss Jean Shaw, he will stay at the United Service Hotel. It is expected that the Hon. Alexander Shaw's party will leave later in the week for Dunedin, Invercargill, and the Southern Lakes.

Sir John Sandeman Allen, who arrived in Christchurch yesterday, left England six months ago on a tour of the Empire to study trade conditions. He is chairman of the Commercial Committee of the House of Commons, and during his tour has already visited East Africa, South Africa, and Australia. Sir John has represented the West Derby constituency in the House of Commons since 1924, and holds a number of important public offices. He is accompanied by Lady Sandeman Allen.

Sir John Sandeman Allen and Lady Allen are with Sir John's brother-in-law, Mr George Spencer, Kirkwood avenue, Riccarton. They will remain in Christchurch until Tuesday, February 20. This evening Sir John and Lady Allen will be the guests at a dinner given by the Canterbury branch of the Royal Empire Society and the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce.

Major C. H. Douglas is the founder of the Douglas social credit system, and has been giving addresses on the system in the main centres of the Dominion. He was to have arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Wellington, but the visit had to be postponed until to-mor-rcw. Consequently the address which Major Douglas was to give to-day at a luncheon arranged by the Christchurch Business Men's Club and the Canterbury Advertising Club had to be cancelled. Major Douglas will be given a civic welcome at noon to-morrow, and tomorrow night will give an address at St. James' Theatre.
