THE CANCELLED CRICKET TOUR

] TO THE KMTOI4 Or TUB P»ISS. Sir,—The New Zealand Cricket Council is to be congratulated on its courageous step in cancelling the Australian lour of New Zealand. At first it would seem that New Zealand should be satisfied with any team sent from Australia, so high is the standard there, but the manner in which the original team has dwindled away has sickened the public upon whose support the success of any tour depends. With the withdrawal of those famous players Whose names are so well known in New Zealand, interest in the tour gradually declined and financial success became more and more improbable. The refusal of so many players to make the trip seems a reflection on New Zealand cricket, however poor the standard may be. It would be extremely interesting to know the reasons for so many defections. The rate of the allowances to be paid has been clearly suggested. If this was a cause, many will regret it. Let us hope that cricket here will not develop into a business and that cricketers will play the game for its own sake.—Yours, etc., February 10, 1924.
