POSITION IN CITY, BOROUGHS, AND COUNTIES As the days approach when the 10 per cent, penalty on rates unpaid is imposed considerable interest is shown in the manner in which the various local bodies are receiving the amounts due to them. Enquiries made yesterday indicated that in some instances payments are almost as good as last year; in others the money is coming in more slowly. The position with respect to the rates of the Christchurch City Council is that ol the 1933-34 levy, amounting to £331.432. there has been collected £59,526 3s, or 17.96 per cent.; on February 8, 1933, of the 1932-33 levy of £333,354 3s 6d there had been collected £60,161 3s lOd, or 18.05 per cent. The amount collected on Thursday was £915 10s 3d; on the corresponding date last year £lO6l 9s Id. The amount of the 1933-34 rates outstanding on Thursday was £271,905 17s; of the 1932-33 rates there was outstanding on February 8, 1933, a total of £273,192 19s Bd. The 10 per cent, penalty will be imposed on rates not paid on or before March 21. In the Boroughs I Riccarton—Levied, £16,702; collected, £4653 15s lOd. The 10 per cent, penalty will be imposed after March Sumner—Levied, £10,311; collected, £3844. or 37 per cent. The penalty will be imposed after February 19. New Brighton—Levied, £15,898 8s 9d; collected, £6699 2s 8d; outstanding, £9199 6s Id. The 10 per cent, penalty will be imposed on February 14. On February 8. 1933, of the 193233 rates levied, £16,902 3 S 2d, there had been collected £7439 6s Bd, and there was outstanding £9462 16s 6d. Lyttelton—Levied, £5036 lis lOd; collected. £2443 0s 6d. February 22 is the last day for the payment before the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty. Position in the Counties Heathcote—Levied, £17,587 5s sdcollected, £9380 9s 6d. After February 16 the 10 per cent, penalty will be imposed. Arrears of 1932-33 rales on April 1, 1933, amounted to £2172 16« Bd, of which there had been paid up to February 9, 1934, the sum of £1052 3s Bd, leaving outstanding £ll2O. At the meeting of the Heathcote County Council last night the county clerk (Mr J. P. E. Veale) was instructed to notify ratepayers in arrears in respect of 1932-33 rates that unless payment was made on or before a specified date legal action would be taken to recover amounts due. Waimairi—Levied. £39,378; colllected, £6500. The ncnalty will be imposed after March 22. Paparua—-Levied, £6800: collected, £3007. The penalty will be imposed on FekVuary 21.
