STREET NOISES

TO THE IDITOR 07 THE PKt3S Sir,—With your kind permission I wish to call attention to the noises in the city streets, particularly in the Square, some of which I venture to say could easily be lessened. For instance the Brighton in-cars on entering the Square slow down to pass over crossing points. and then put on Lull power for about 15 yards and make a terrific grinding noise. Some other cars, although not quite as bad, might be handled and make much loss noise on the time they save by putting on the power rush. Another preventable noise is inside the cars, where a very unpleasant jar is made in the shifting over of the backs of seats before coming to the terminus, and also of windows and doors. Could the board instruct the morormen and conductors to tone' down these noises? I may say that I feel thankful to some of the conductors for calling the 2iames of stops, being a help to many passengers. Another needless noise often heard is that of the motor-cyclist who, regardless of the law, goes with exhaust open. In some cities of the old world action is being taken to curtail noises.—Yours, etc., A CITIZEN. February 9, 1934
