HKATHCOTK The meeting of (he Heatheote County Council, hold last night, was attended by Crs. C. Flavell (chairman i, W. W. ScariT. W. Kerr, E. Rowse, A. G. Williams, and F. W. Freeman. The secretary of the Marine Department wrote that at present he could not say when he would be visiting Christchurch, but when opportunity offeree! lie would be glad to confer with the council respecting the river bank protection repair' work at. Bexley. Cr. Freeman said that he would be in Wellington next week, and he was empowered to talk the matter over with the secretary of the Marine Department. The Town Clerk of Christchurch (Mr J. S. The condition of the Bower bridge was discussed, and its dangerous state as witnessed on the occasion of the county inspection was emphasised. It was decided to make application to the District Highway Council for a new bridge, providing accommodation for two-way traffic and a footway. RANG[OKA The Rangiora County Council met on Thursday night. Present—Messrs W. Stalker (chairman), G. K. Crysell, H. Tallotl. J. Brosnan, A. Mcintosh, J. M. Young, and M. C. Ormandy. Eight owners of properties fronting the road past the tennis court at the Waikuku beach wrote asking that some improvement be made to the road. It was agreed that repairs be effected as soon as opportunity offered. Mr J. T. Wright wrote thanking the council for the improvements effected to the Camside road, Kaiapoi. It was decided to cease buying birds' heads and eggs as from February 13. March 22 was the date fixed by which rates must be paid to escape the imposition of the 10 per cent, pen- • alty. ]

Two tenders were received for Ihe supply of a power grader, and that of John Chambers. Ltd.. was accepted. It was decided to retain the old grader for stand-by purposes. The financial statement showed the receipts for January to have been £1134 Is 7d, and the payments £604 10s 2d, leaving a debit balance of £3341 3s 2d.

Accounts totalling £435 7s 4d were passed for payment. In his report the foreman stated that the shingling of the Camside road had been completed and the large stones carted off the Lineside and Fernside roads. The embankment at the Cam river had been attended to, and it was proposed to start cleaning the river in a few days. The number of relief workers employed remained the same, very little outside work ofienng. Repairs to streets in the borough were being carried out with traction engine and road roller

SPRINGS At the monthly meeting of the Springs County Council, held at I Springston on Thursday, there were ! present: Crs. J. S. Simpson (chairman'i, P. V. Bailey, J. W. Kime, J. Woods. and C. H. Watson. The health inspector reported that no cases of infectious disease had been investigated in Springs during the last month. Mr W.J. Sly, Springston, drew attention to the size of culverts in the main Springston-Leeston road drain, and stated that in the event of the drain overflowing and flooding his property he would hold the council liable for any damage resulting. In r. discussion on the condition of the roads, Cr. Watson said that the roads in the Greenpark riding had never been in better order. A good deal of extra work has been necessary during the holidays because of the increase in traffic. It was decided to obtain a set of blades for the tractor grader of a new type as a trial. The chairman was appointed to represent the council at a conference of representatives of local bodies called by the Canterbury Roadside Beautifying Association. Two property transfers were notified. It was reported that a fence had been placed across Chapman's road, a little-used road running from Ridge road near the railway line to the Halswcll river. The council decided to write to the Ellcsmere Land Drainage Board requesting the removal of the fence.

Referring to the maintenance of roadways over the three fords in the Sclw.yn river, the chairman suggested that the Springs Council should take the responsibility of keeping them in order and charge the Ellesmere Council with half the cost.

Members expressed approval of the proposal, and the clerk was instructed (o place it before the Ellesmere Council.

The clerk reported that out of a total of £3113 levied in rates £949 had been paid.
