EARTHQUAKES AND BUILDINGS
DISAPPROVAL OF* ACTION OK GOVKRNMKNT ■intij a>jsOi I*l ins 'ir.r.F.ciiiM.) HASTINGS, February 9. Disapproval of the Government's intciifled revocation of the building regulations issued by proclamation in respect of Hastings, Napier and Wairoa, and imposed after the earthquake in 1331, was expressed last evening by the Mayor of Hastings (Mr G. A. Maddison) at a meeting of the Co: nii'-;h Council.
Mr Maddison said thai in his opinion the Government should not only keep the regulations in force in Die boroughs mentioned, but should apply them 'to the whole of New Zealand. It was reasonable to fear that the country might some day suffer just as great an earthquake as Ilawke's Bay had experienced. The lessons of 1931 should not be forgotten. For the protection of Die profile the regulations .should be made compulsory throughout the whole of New Zealand.
The council. unanimously passed a resolution to inform the Department of Internal Affairs that the withdrawal of the proclamation would make no difference to Hastings as the borough bylaws provided for all necessary requirements, but that the council was firmly of the opinion that the regulations as they exist at. present should apply to the whole of New Zealand.
