KENNEL NOTES

« lUv CALKII. I iVurnr.a loi in-iver in lhi« column should be addressed tn "Caleb." cava -The Proas," (Jb:itlrhiircl). and )o menu: publication on any i-nti'rdsy mutl he le oivcd not later than tho Tliuisday piecrdin™.] ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT "Gun Dog," Temuka.—ln answer to your letter, either the Springer Spaniel or English or Irish Setter would best suit your purpose. The English Setter is docile, easy to train, and, of course, excels on feathered game, but not so fond of water as the Irish variety. The Springer is a good, all-round gun dog, a tireless worker, arid more adapted for retrieving than either of the setters, whose principal instinct is the finding and "setting" of game. In regard to sex, it is difficult to say whether a dog or bitch would make the best worker, but unless you intend to go in for breeding it would perhaps be best to secure a male.

The English Setter seems to be rapidly coming into its own in New Zealand, following its popularity in England, for Airs R. Y. White, owner of the Beechwood Setters at Styx, tells me that she has this week received many enquiries for young stock of this graceful breed. She has disposed of a particularly tine dog puppy, Leon of Beech wood, to Mr G. M. Arthur, of Timaru. who is one of South Canterbury's crack shots, and chose Leon lor his working qualities, but he also intends showing and breeding. The puppy is a replica of his sire, Rapanui Ranger, a winner of 18 firsts, but takes his colouring from his grandsire, Ch. Ginger Mick. His dam is bv die well-known imported winner, Devon Lad and Ch. Rapanui Joan. Leon will be shown at the forthcoming parade of the South Canterbury Kennel Club, Timaru. lie has the darkest possible eye, the true Setter skull, and exceptional feet, and should hold his own among the best at future shows.

Duiing ihe week I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr and Mrs N. G. Cr;tchfield, who are now settled at Studholme Junction. Mr Critchfleld was formerly a noted breeder of Wire Fox Terriers in Duncdin. and about •he year 1023 he won the award for best dog in the show witli his Wire Fox. Terrier, Ch. Oxford Dempscy, and has aiways been in close touch with the canine world. At present his particular fancy is the Bulldog. He lias i:i his kennel a beautiful puppy, four months, by Ch. Gane from Bonnv Beauty, a typical specimen that will shortly be registered and shown as Black Jester.

Airs Critchfield. also a lover of dogs. .s interested in Pomeranians, and has jWvt acquired an outstanding wolfrab'o bitch puppy. Dainty Miss, bv Ch. Shetland Authority from Lndv Bettv. She is three months old and with ordinary luck will go a long way on the show bench.

San-Toy of Santa Fe. a snlendid little Pekingese bitch owned bv Mrs M. H. Mac Gibbon, has bren mated with Mrs U. Jones's dog Chong Himself who was recently acquired from Miss Winders, of Auckland, after winning at nianv shows in the North Island. Mr David Allen, of Hnrewood. reports that his blue roan Cocker bitch Straven Beauty, who is particularly ;'-cll-bred, claiming for her sire cii. Homesnun of Ware and her dam Braeval Blue, has been mated to Mr T Blumsky's Wwndham Wonder Mr R. O. Johnson, of St. Albans, has disposed of a-very handsome hlacV Seottish Terrier doc to Miss Acland of Park terrace. Ohrisfchurch. This younester is by the well-known Scoti'sh Mac from Highland and waived by Mrs Mac Donald, of Ttnngiora mvni>r of tlie latter.

Miss Leila Greig, owner of the Chingford Kennels, Timaru, tells me

that her Sealyharn bitch. Harplrce Ladybird, bred by Captain Olphert. in Wellington, is very shortly expecting a litter to Opihi Prince Serenade, a worthy son of Ch. Brazen Biltong, owned by Mr G. C. Hayhurst, veterinary practitioner, of Oamaru. It is to be hoped that Miss Greig has belter luck with this litter than she did with the rast mating of Ladybird. CANTERBURY KENNEL CLUB MKMOKRS' PARADE Members are reminded Ihct a parade (for members only) will be held iii the grounds of the residence of Mrs M. H. Mac Gibbon, 19 Nascby street, Merivale, on Saturday, February 17, commencing at 2 p.m. There are puppy, novice, and open classes for Toy dogs, Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, and other sporting dogs nonsporting, other than Toys, and an open class open to all breeds.
