SUMMER SPORTS

PROGRAMME FOR TO-DAY CONTINUANCE OF WEEKLY COMPETITIONS If the various grounds should dry off in time after the heavy rain which fell yesterday, a comprehensive programme of summer sports will be held to-day. The list includes cricket, tennis, athletics, yachting, swimming, croquet, cycling, whippet racing, and bowls. The eighth series of matches in the Canterbury Cricket Association's senior competition will be commenced. West Christchurch will meet Old Collegians on the No. 2 ground at Hagley park, Riccarton will meet Sydenham on the No. 1 ground, Old Boys will play St. Albans on the No. 3 ground, and Lancaster Park will play East Christchurch on its own ground. In the first meeting between Old Collegians and West Christchurch the latter team made an enormous score, but to-day it will have some of its strongest players out. Some of the Old Collegians batsmen are in excellent form, and against a weakened bowling side it is possible (hey will compile a substantial score. The most interesting of the other games should be that between Riccarton and Sydenham. i Matches arranged by the Suburban Association and the Girls' Association will also be played. Tennis The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's competitions will be continued at the association's grounds, Wilding Park, and at other city and suburban courts. Most of the province's leading players will be seen in the senior games ' which will be:—Linwood v. Addington, ' courts 1 and 2; United No. 1 v. United No. 2, at United Club: Cathedral v. Fendalton, courts 3 and 4; Canterbury College v. United No. 3, courts 5 and 6; Cashmere a bye. The A, B, C, and D grades will also ■ be continued. All matches will commence at 1.30 p.m. A representative team of A grade , players will travel to Motukarara to , play a team representing the Elles- \ mere Sub-Association. J The finals of the junior croquet tournament of Canterbury, which were to ' have been held at the United Club's green yesterday, were postponed on account of the bad weather, until today. Play will commence at 11 a.m. Other Sports The Halswell Cycling Club will hold a meeting on the Halswell domain this afternoon and all of Canterbury's leading amateurs will compete. The racing should be close and interesting. Swimmers will be catered for by a carnival at the Linwood Club's baths in Woodham road, and the opening ceremony at the new St. Albans baths will also be held. The Sanders Cup contest will be continued at Lyttelton. The contest is in a particularly interesting stage, Otago and Canterbury each having two wins and Wellington one win. Races for A and B class yachts will be held on the Estuary and other sports include an inter-club athletic meeting at the Ensor's road ground a whippet racing meeting, and bowls matches on city and suburban grounds.
