It was not generally realised in New Zealand that farming was still the largest industry in Great Britain, said Mr Will Appleton, of Wellington, on his return from a tour overseas. It was responsible for the employment of more people than the whole of the engineering trades and shipbuilding combined, _ and while relatively dairying occupied a less important place there than it did in New Zealand, the production of milk was one of the features. In the last 12 years, in most parts -cf Ihe world, dairying had yielded greater profit than the growing of grain and stock-raising, and the British farmer was just as much alive to this development as the farmer in New Zealand or Australia.
